What to expect

  • We make a list with you of the files you need, including your highest priorities.
  • The evaluation helps us explain the recovery options, proposed work, price and timing.
  • For drives and cards, we work from a copy so the original is not pushed any further.

How it works

  1. Describe the drive and the problemSend the request on this page and choose a time to bring it in. Tell us if it stopped appearing, disconnects or shows a format prompt, and which files you need.
  2. Evaluation and quoteWe evaluate the storage and discuss the recovery options, price and timeline with you. You approve the work first.
  3. Recovery from a copyWe work from a copy of drive or card data during recovery, keeping your original from being pushed further.
  4. Pickup and checkYour files go onto a drive or device you bring, and you check them with us at pickup.

Before you come in

  • Disconnect the drive and leave it off. Repeated attempts to read a failing drive can cost data.
  • Leave a format prompt unanswered, and do not run recovery software on a drive that clicks, disconnects or asks to be formatted.
  • Keep the drive closed and bring any cable you have. You do not need to identify the fault before requesting an evaluation.

Common questions

Can I request recovery if my external drive is not showing up?
Yes. Describe the drive and what changed, including any disconnects or error messages. Bring the drive and any cable you have to the evaluation. We assess the storage with the files you need in mind, then discuss the options and quote with you.
What should I do if the computer asks me to format the drive?
If the drive holds files you need, leave the prompt unanswered and stop using the drive. Do not run recovery software on a drive that asks to be formatted. Tell us about the prompt in your request so we can evaluate it before recovery work starts.
What if my hard drive clicks or keeps disconnecting?
Power it off and leave it off. Clicking can indicate a mechanical fault that needs specialized handling, and repeated read attempts can make a weak drive worse. Keep the drive closed, describe the symptoms in your request and bring it in for an evaluation of the recovery options.
Do you evaluate SSDs as well as hard drives?
Yes. Choose Hard drive or SSD in the request form and tell us which device you have. An SSD that is unreadable or not showing up starts with an evaluation. If the storage is still inside a MacBook or laptop, you can bring that device and describe the startup problem too.
Does data recovery mean the drive will work normally again?
The goal is to recover your files. Recovery can be possible even when a drive or computer is not practical to repair for everyday use. We discuss the proposed work and recovery priorities with you after the evaluation.
How much does hard drive or SSD data recovery cost?
The price depends on the device and the fault. We quote after evaluating it, and you approve the price before recovery work starts. Describe what happened in the form; no payment is collected when you send the request.
Can I request a rush if I need the files by a deadline?
Yes. Choose your drop-off time, select the rush option and tell us when you need the data back. We confirm the available timing and any rush fee with you before the appointment.
Is my data private?
We access only what is needed to confirm the recovery worked, and your files go onto a drive or device you own. Our privacy page explains how we handle personal information.
Do I need an appointment?
Yes. We are by appointment only, on the second floor at 2505 Channing Way, Suite 6, Berkeley. The request on this page asks for a time, and we confirm it with you. For a question first, text or call.
