The PS5 HDMI port repair is by far our most common console job — we've done dozens over the last year and a half. Most of those consoles came in with a solid white light and no picture, which is the classic HDMI or encoder-chip symptom. The DualSense drift repair is the fix for a stick that moves the camera or character on its own without you touching it.

Repair vs. replace: the actual math

The question underneath every price is "is my PlayStation worth fixing." The honest answer is a comparison, not a slogan. Sony raised console prices across the line in April 2026: the PS5 Digital Edition is now $599.99, the Disc model $649.99, and the PS5 Pro $899.99 (Tom's Hardware on the 2026 price hike). That reframes the whole decision.

A single-fault PS5 is almost always worth repairing. A $159 HDMI fix or a $149 power supply repair against a $600-plus replacement isn't a close call — you're spending a quarter of the new-console price to keep the console, the storage, and everything installed on it. The case for replacing only gets real when a console has multiple failing systems at once, and even then a $59 diagnostic is the cheapest way to find out whether that's true before you spend $600.

A useful rule of thumb: weigh the repair cost against the console's age and what it would cost to replace. If the repair is a fraction of replacement and the console is otherwise healthy, fix it. If the console is nickel-and-diming you with a new fault every few months, the diagnostic will usually reveal a deeper problem and we'll tell you so.

Factory service is not the same product as a local, targeted repair. Sony requires a return authorization and shipment to its service facility, currently warns of extended turnaround, and reserves the option to replace the console or storage with factory-recertified hardware. Its PS5 service terms explicitly warn that service may cause loss of data or content. A local component-level repair keeps the original console and storage together and often gets a common single-fault system back the same day or next day when the part and bench are available.

The older PS4 question

The PS4 is previous-generation hardware — Sony wound down production, discontinuing it in Japan in early 2024 (PlayStation 4 production history). That changes the calculus slightly, but not as much as you'd think, because PS4 repairs are cheaper too.

• Worth it on a PS4: a $99 HDMI port repair, a $139 power supply repair, or a $79 cleaning on a console you still play regularly and that has your library installed. A working PS4 plays a deep catalog, and these repairs are inexpensive.
• Think harder on a PS4: stacking two or three repairs on a console that's already flaky. If the diagnostic finds the board is failing in more than one place, sinking money into an aging PS4 makes less sense than it would on a PS5 you'll keep for years.

The diagnostic exists precisely for this judgment call. It keeps you from replacing an entire console when one $99–$139 repair can put the system you already own back in service.

Beyond PlayStation: Xbox and Switch
