Nintendo's own troubleshooting adds a hard-reset step: hold the POWER button for about 15 to 20 seconds, then try charging again. If the charge icon appears after a wait, it was never broken.
2. A bent, dirty, or loose USB-C port
The port takes daily abuse — every dock, every cable, every time it gets set down on the connector. Pins bend. Lint packs into the slot. Solder joints under the port crack from the leverage of a cable getting knocked. The tells: charging only at one specific cable angle, a cable that won't seat with a solid click, or a port that's visibly crooked. A flashlight and a look inside will often show packed lint or a bent pin.

3. The M92T36 power-management chip
This is the one people don't see coming. The M92T36 is the USB-C power IC on the Switch mainboard. It handles power negotiation — the handshake between the console and whatever it's plugged into. When it fails, the Switch can stop charging entirely even though the port looks perfect.
The common way it dies is worth knowing: cheap third-party docks and chargers. The Switch community has documented this for years — a knockoff dock botches the power handshake, overstresses the M92T36, and the chip gives out. Sometimes it takes the charging out; sometimes it takes the whole console. The lesson is boring and correct: use the official dock and adapter, or a well-reviewed one from a maker that got the USB-C spec right. If your Switch stopped charging after a bargain dock, the M92T36 is a prime suspect. Why a port replacement is soldering, not a plug-in part
On a lot of phones the charging port is on a flex cable you unplug and swap. The Switch isn't built that way. The USB-C port is soldered directly to the mainboard through a dense pattern of pins and ground pads. Replacing it means desoldering the old port with hot air without cooking the components around it, cleaning the pads, and reflowing a new port into place under magnification.
That's why "just replace the port" is real bench work and priced accordingly. Done right, it's a permanent repair. Done with a soldering iron and hope, it lifts pads off the board and turns a $139 job into a much larger one. FAQ
Can I keep using a slightly bent port?
You can, but it tends to get worse. A port that only charges at one angle is telling you the connection is marginal, and every cable insertion works the bent pins or the cracked solder joint a little further. Once you're wiggling the cable to find the sweet spot, the port is on its way out — better to have it looked at before it fails completely or damages the pads underneath.
Are my saved games safe during a charging repair?
Yes. Switch save data lives in the console's internal system memory, not on the microSD card and not on the charging board. A port or chip repair touches the power hardware, not the storage where your saves are, so a normal charging repair doesn't put your games at risk. Will a new port fix slow charging?
